Brown County Christian Academy has two defining educational characteristics.
We are Christian and we are Classical.
We are Christian and we are Classical.
As a Christian School we mean that our education is
CHRIST-CENTERED: True learning begins with acknowledging that all things have been created by and for Christ (Col. 1:17). He is not confined to our daily chapel service and Bible classes. He is at the core of everything we teach. It is a deliberate approach to see Christ ruling over every thought, every idea, every subject, whether physics or phys-ed. We learn about the depravity of man while reading classic literature. We discover God's beauty reflected in the symmetry of an algebraic equation. We perceive God's wisdom in the geometrical proportionality found within the harmonies of music and the movements of the planets. We learn about His character and creativity through the Fibonacci sequence found in both flowers and galaxies. |
As a Classical School we mean that our education is
CLASSICALLY INFLUENCED: Classical Education is about who we become, not simply what we know. It is a time-tested approach to education that is rooted in history. It begins with fundamental truth that In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). When we look into the eyes of every child, we don’t simply see a student, but a person divinely created for a purpose. Therefore, our education is focused on much more than preparing the students for worldly success. It is designed to be training of the mind, body, and spirit for a well-ordered life, aiming towards participation in the Kingdom of God. |
CHARACTER FOCUSED
Our students learn stewardship, honor, and self-control. These virtues are a part of our common school language and create a culture where truth, beauty, and goodness can flourish. We seek to educate not only the mind, but the heart as well. We desire to cultivate within each student the desire and ability to love that which is worthy of loving and to repudiate that which needs repudiating. |

WONDER ORIENTED
Knowledge begins in wonder. When we look out into the world wonder wells up within and causes us to ask the question, "why?" We believe education should be motived by a sense of wonder and that schools should serve to cultivate and guide its development and maturity. From this perspective, we believe education should not only focus on the nuts and bolts of what a child is learning, but on training them how to learn. |

TRIVIUM BASED
The trivium is a three stage approach to education that addresses how children naturally receive and retain information.
Each stage (Grammar, Logic/Dialectic, Rhetoric) complements the child’s natural development.

Young children can memorize information easily. So, in the early years, we incorporate songs, body movement, recitation, and exploration to enhance learning. This sets each student up for success in their next stage of learning. In jr. high, students tend to ask “why” as they grow in their critical thinking skills. You may have noticed how they love to debate! We capitalize on that natural tendency and introduce them to logic, giving them lots of opportunity to practice this skill in all other subjects.

Once a student reaches high school it is now time for teaching rhetoric or the art of presenting ideas. The goal of this state is to cultivate wisdom in the student. The young adult is now capable of using this broad foundation of knowledge to carefully consider the moral implications of their actions upon the world around them.
LANGUAGE and LITERATURE RICH:
We believe words are important. By God’s word all things were created (Gen.1). Then God gave Adam the job of naming (with words!) the creation. Jesus cast out demons and healed people with words. Faith comes through hearing the word of Christ preached (Rom. 10:17). So, while we start with cultivating a love of God’s Word, we seek to foster within the student a love of all words, whether in language or literature. We accomplish through the study of classic literature and the classic languages. This allows each student to join the great conversation and see how every generation has answered the great questions of life: Who am I? Why am I here? How then must I live? |
HISTORY-BASED
We love history. As Christians we are called to be a people steeped in history as the drama of God’s redemptive work. It is our desire to cultivate within each student a deep respect for the past. We see history as the backdrop for all learning, so all other subjects are linked to what is being studied in History. This systematic approach teaches each student to find their place in the larger story of the world, rather than viewing themselves as the center of the world. |
